Frosting Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder, sifted
- 3-4 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
- Beat the Butter: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a large mixing bowl using an electric mixer, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 1 minute until creamy.
- Add Dry Ingredients and Liquids: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder one cup at a time, beating to combine fully. Slowly pour in the heavy cream and vanilla extract, add a pinch of salt if desired, and continue beating until the mixture is well combined, scraping down the bowl sides as needed, for about 2 minutes.
- Whip Until Fluffy: Increase the mixer speed to high and beat the frosting for an additional 2 minutes until light, fluffy, and smooth. Use immediately to frost your baked goods or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use softened butter for best texture and easier whipping.
- Sift powdered sugar and cocoa powder to avoid lumps in the frosting.
- You can adjust the amount of heavy cream or milk to achieve your desired consistency.
- If storing, let the frosting come to room temperature and re-whip slightly before using.
- Add a pinch of salt to enhance the chocolate flavor, but it is optional.
