Cooked on the stovetop or grilled, they offer a healthy and delicious alternative to traditional beef burgers, served on your favorite buns with fresh fixings.

Ingredients

Scale

Black Bean Burger Patties

  • 3 cups cooked black beans, drained and rinsed
  • â…“ cup grated yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 chipotle peppers from a can of chipotles in adobo, diced
  • 2 tablespoons adobo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing

For Cooking and Serving

  • Cooking spray, if grilling
  • Hamburger buns, for serving
  • Desired fixings (lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, etc.), for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Black Bean Patties: In a large bowl, combine the cooked black beans, grated yellow onion, minced garlic, diced chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, tamari, balsamic vinegar, ground cumin, sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Use a potato masher to mash the ingredients together until the mixture holds and contains some chunky texture from the beans.
  2. Add Egg and Bread Crumbs: Add the large egg and panko bread crumbs to the mashed bean mixture. Fold them in gently until fully combined to form a slightly sticky mixture that will hold together when shaped into patties.
  3. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 6 evenly sized patties. If the mixture feels too wet and is difficult to handle, place the patties in the refrigerator to chill for 20 minutes to firm up before cooking.
  4. Cook the Patties (Stovetop Method): Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly brush with extra-virgin olive oil. Add the patties and cook for about 5 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust and are heated through.
  5. Alternatively, Grill the Patties: Preheat a grill and lightly spray the grates with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Grill the patties for 8 minutes on the first side and then flip and cook for 4 minutes on the second side until nicely charred and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Place the cooked black bean burgers on hamburger buns and add your favorite fixings, such as lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, or condiments, then serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Using chipotle peppers in adobo adds a smoky and spicy flavor; adjust quantity to your heat preference.
  • If vegan, substitute the egg with a flax egg or other binder alternatives.
  • For gluten-free version, use gluten-free bread crumbs or omit entirely.
  • Chilling patties helps them hold together better during cooking.
  • Store leftover patties wrapped in fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
