Ingredients
Scale
Chalupa Shells
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- Vegetable oil for frying
Filling & Toppings
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 2/3 cup water
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup sour cream
Instructions
- Make the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the vegetable shortening until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in warm milk until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Shape the Chalupas: Divide the dough into 6 equal balls and roll each into a 6-inch circle.
- Fry the Chalupa Shells: Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry each dough circle for about 1 minute per side until golden brown. Use tongs to gently fold the fried dough into taco shapes while still frying. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Prepare the Beef Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until fully browned. Drain excess fat, then add the taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- Assemble the Chalupas: Fill each fried chalupa shell with the seasoned beef, then top generously with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and a dollop of sour cream.
Notes
- For a quicker option, use store-bought flatbreads or pre-made fry-ready taco shells.
- Add guacamole or hot sauce for an extra burst of flavor.
- To make this recipe vegetarian, substitute the beef with seasoned black beans or plant-based meat crumbles.
- Ensure oil is at the correct temperature to avoid greasy or undercooked shells.
