Ingredients
Scale
Potato Mixture
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared and cooled)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg, beaten
Coating
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
For Frying
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine mashed potatoes, shredded cheddar, Parmesan, flour, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and beaten egg. Mix everything thoroughly until the mixture is well combined and holds together.
- Form the Puffs: Using your hands or a small cookie scoop, shape the mixture into bite-sized balls about 1 inch in diameter, ensuring they are compact to prevent breaking during frying.
- Coat with Breadcrumbs: Roll each potato ball evenly in panko breadcrumbs, ensuring a full coating to achieve a crispy exterior once fried.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying but not smoking.
- Fry the Puffs: Fry the potato puffs in batches for 3 to 4 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even golden browning. They should become crispy on the outside while heated through inside.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the cooked puffs with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm as a delicious snack or appetizer.
Notes
- For a lighter alternative, bake the puffs on a parchment-lined baking sheet at 400°F for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden and crispy.
- Add finely chopped herbs such as chives or parsley to the potato mixture to enhance flavor.
- Ensure mashed potatoes are cooled to prevent excess moisture and maintain the right consistency for shaping.
