Description
Celebrate Canada Day with these easy and festive cookies made from a simple yellow cake mix, studded with Oh Canada! M&Ms. Soft, colorful, and quick to prepare, these cookies are perfect for patriotic celebrations or any time you want a sweet treat bursting with bright Canadian-themed colors.
Ingredients
Scale
Cookie Dough
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil (e.g. canola)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 (190g/6.7 ounce) package Oh Canada! M&Ms
Instructions
- Mix Ingredients: Add the yellow cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs to a large mixing bowl. Using an electric hand mixer on low speed, blend until just combined. Gently fold in the Oh Canada! M&Ms to evenly distribute them throughout the dough.
- Chill Dough: Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer, or alternatively place it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes. Chilling helps reduce stickiness and encourages puffier cookies, but this step can be skipped if you’re short on time.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a Silpat non-stick baking mat.
- Form and Bake Cookies: Shape the dough into 2-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing at least 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake the cookies for 11-13 minutes until they are set around the edges but still soft in the center.
- Cool and Store: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack. Once fully cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container to maintain their softness.
Notes
- Chilling the dough is optional but recommended for less sticky dough and puffier cookies.
- Spacing cookies well on the tray prevents them from spreading into each other.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cookie removal and less mess.
- Store cookies airtight to keep them soft for several days.
- These cookies are perfect for celebrations and can be customized with other colored M&Ms or candy mix-ins.
