Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 pre-made sponge cake or 6 slices of pound cake
Custard Layer
- 1 cup thick custard (vanilla pudding or custard-style)
Whipped Cream
- 1 cup whipped cream (fresh or store-bought)
Fruit Layers
- 1 ½ cups fresh fruit (strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries)
- ¼ cup fruit jam (optional)
- 2 tablespoons fruit juice or syrup
Garnish
- Sprinkles, grated chocolate, or extra fruit for garnish
Optional
- 6 trifle glasses or clear dessert cups
Instructions
- Prepare the cake: Cut the pre-made sponge or pound cake into small cubes. If desired, lightly brush the cubes with fruit jam or syrup to add extra flavor and moisture.
- Prepare the whipped cream: Whip fresh cream until soft peaks form, or use pre-made whipped topping. Keep the whipped cream chilled until assembly to maintain texture.
- Prepare the fruit: Wash and chop the fresh fruit into bite-sized pieces. Pat dry thoroughly to remove any excess moisture which could dilute the layers.
- Assemble the trifle layers: In each trifle glass or dessert cup, start by adding a layer of cake cubes at the bottom, followed by a layer of custard, then a layer of fresh fruit, and top with whipped cream. Repeat this layering sequence once more, finishing with a top layer of whipped cream.
- Garnish and chill: Decorate the top layer with sprinkles, additional fruit slices, or grated chocolate to enhance presentation. Chill the assembled trifles in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and the dessert to set.
- Serve: Serve the mini trifles cold directly in the individual cups or jars for an elegant and refreshing dessert experience.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh, high-quality fruit that is in season.
- If preferred, substitute custard with flavored pudding variations like chocolate or caramel.
- The trifles can be prepared several hours ahead of time and refrigerated until serving.
- Use clear glasses or dessert cups to showcase the beautiful layers.
- Adjust sweetness by choosing sweeter fruits or varying the amount of jam and syrup brushed on cake layers.
