Description

A comforting and hearty one-pan meal featuring savory sausage gravy topped with golden baked biscuits, perfect for a satisfying breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb bulk pork sausage
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1-2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoky paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 3 1/2 cups whole or 2% milk

Biscuit Topping

  • 1 12 oz. package Ready to Bake Biscuits
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get ready for baking the biscuits later.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a medium skillet, crumble and cook the pork sausage over medium heat until it just browns. If a lot of grease is rendered, drain it and then return the sausage to the pan.
  3. Make Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir until it is absorbed. Add the seasoned salt, smoky paprika, red pepper flakes, and ground black pepper. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring until the mixture is well combined. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens but remains slightly soupy.
  4. Arrange Biscuits: Remove the skillet from heat and evenly place the raw biscuits over the sausage gravy in the skillet.
  5. Butter Biscuits: Brush the tops of each biscuit with melted butter to help them brown beautifully while baking.
  6. Bake: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake until the biscuits are golden brown on top, approximately 25-30 minutes depending on your oven.
  7. Cool Slightly: Carefully transfer the skillet to a cooling rack or a cooled stovetop and let it set for 5 minutes; this helps the gravy thicken further.
  8. Serve: Spoon the biscuit gravy cobbler onto plates and enjoy a warm, hearty meal.

Notes

  • If your sausage is very lean, add a tablespoon of butter or oil during cooking to ensure enough fat for the gravy base.
  • Adjust the seasoned salt and pepper to taste for your preferred level of seasoning and heat.
  • Use whole milk for a richer gravy or 2% for a lighter version.
  • You can substitute Ready to Bake Biscuits with homemade biscuit dough if preferred.
  • Serve with a side of fresh fruit or a green salad for a balanced meal.
