Ingredients
Scale
For the Turkey Patties
- 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Gravy and Slow Cooker Base
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 1 1/2 cups beef or turkey broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Prepare the Turkey Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are just combined to avoid overworking the meat.
- Form the Patties: Shape the turkey mixture into six evenly sized oval patties, making sure they are compact but not too dense, for even cooking.
- Brown the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown each patty for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they develop a nice color and crust; this locks in juices and adds flavor.
- Prepare Slow Cooker Base: Place the sliced onions and mushrooms evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker to form a flavorful bed for the patties.
- Layer Patties in Slow Cooker: Place the browned turkey patties on top of the onions and mushrooms in the slow cooker.
- Add Broth and Cook: Pour the beef or turkey broth evenly over the patties and vegetables. Cover with lid and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours, or on HIGH for 3 hours, until patties are cooked through and tender.
- Thicken the Gravy: Carefully remove the patties from the slow cooker and set aside. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir this slurry into the remaining liquid in the slow cooker.
- Cook Gravy: Cook the gravy on HIGH for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to a smooth consistency.
- Return Patties to Gravy: Place the turkey patties back into the thickened gravy in the slow cooker, coating them well.
- Serve: Serve the hot turkey Salisbury steaks over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
Notes
- For best results, do not overmix the turkey mixture as it can make the patties tough.
- You can substitute ground chicken if preferred.
- The broth can be adjusted to low sodium if desired to reduce salt intake.
- Feel free to add a splash of soy sauce or a dash of thyme for extra flavor in the gravy.
- If you prefer a thicker or thinner gravy, adjust the cornstarch slurry amount accordingly.
- Make sure to brown the patties well to enhance flavor and texture.
