Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Filling
- 6 slices fresh white sandwich bread, crusts removed
- 1/2 punnet strawberries, diced small
- 4 1/2 tbsp Nutella
Batter and Coating
- 1 egg, large
- 2 tbsp milk, full cream or low fat
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup caster sugar (superfine sugar)
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Prepare Egg Mixture: In a bowl with a flat base large enough to lay the roll ups, whisk together the egg, milk, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and smooth.
- Prepare Sugar Coating: Spread the caster sugar out in a small shallow dish to coat the roll ups later.
- Flatten Bread: Use a rolling pin to roll each slice of bread flat. This softens the bread and makes it easier to roll up tightly, helping them hold their shape while cooking.
- Spread Nutella: Evenly spread about 3/4 tablespoon of Nutella on each flattened slice, covering it comfortably but not overflowing.
- Add Strawberries: Sprinkle diced strawberries along the bottom edge of each Nutella-spread bread slice to add fresh sweetness and texture.
- Roll Up: Starting from the strawberry edge, tightly roll up the bread into a cylinder. The Nutella acts as a glue to seal the roll ups and keep them intact during cooking.
- Heat Butter: In a skillet or frying pan, melt the butter over medium-high heat until foamy and hot, ready for frying the roll ups.
- Coat and Cook Roll Ups: Dip each roll up into the egg mixture, fully coating it, then shake off excess before placing it in the hot pan. Repeat with all roll ups, cooking them in batches if needed.
- Fry Until Golden: Cook the roll ups for about 4 minutes total, turning every minute or so to brown each side evenly until golden brown and cooked through.
- Coat with Sugar: Remove the cooked roll ups from the pan and immediately roll them in the caster sugar until well coated, adding a sweet, crunchy finish.
- Serve Warm: Enjoy the roll ups immediately while warm and gooey for the best taste and texture experience.
Notes
- Removing the crusts from the bread helps create a smooth roll up and prevents tough edges.
- Rolling the bread flat makes the roll ups easier to roll and prevents cracking or breaking during cooking.
- Using superfine sugar ensures a delicate, even coating that sticks nicely to the warm roll ups.
- Serve immediately to enjoy the warm, melty Nutella center before it cools and firms up.
- Optionally, you can add a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup for extra sweetness.
