Dough & Topping
- 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Glaze
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the twists.
- Prepare the dough: Unroll the crescent dough and separate into rectangles, pressing the seams together to create solid pieces for twisting.
- Mix cinnamon sugar: In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Butter and sugar topping: Brush the dough evenly with melted butter, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top, gently pressing it into the dough to adhere well.
- Cut and twist: Cut each rectangle into strips about 1 inch wide. Twist each strip several times and arrange the twists on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the twists: Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the twists are golden brown and puffed, achieving a perfect flaky texture.
- Prepare glaze: While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth to create a sweet glaze.
- Finish and serve: Remove the twists from the oven and let them cool slightly. Drizzle the glaze over the warm twists and serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For extra crunch, sprinkle a little coarse sugar on top before baking.
- These twists are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and reheated briefly before serving.
- For variation, add chopped pecans or drizzle lightly with cream cheese frosting.
